Let's begin with what should be an obvious statement but, in the context of the Indian lingerie market, remains quietly radical: every woman deserves lingerie that is beautiful. Not functional-but-plain. Not available-if-you-look-hard-enough. Not one style in three colours if you happen to wear above an XL. Beautiful, well-made, thoughtfully designed lingerie — in her size, without compromise.
This guide is for Indian women in sizes XL through 5XL who are done settling for less. It covers what to look for, what the market actually offers, how to find your fit, and — most importantly — why the idea that lingerie is somehow less relevant or less worthy of investment at larger sizes is a notion worth discarding entirely.
The Indian innerwear market has grown significantly over the last five years. But most of that growth has been concentrated at the smaller end of the size spectrum — the brands making the most noise, spending the most on marketing, and stocking the most beautiful products are overwhelmingly focused on sizes S through L.
The result for women in XL and above: a frustrating experience of finding that the gorgeous lace set you saw in an ad isn't available in your size, the "plus size" option is a completely different (and notably plainer) product than the regular range, or the sizing simply stops at XXL despite the fact that a meaningful portion of Indian women wear larger than that.
At CELAORA, our size range goes up to 5XL — genuinely, not as a marketing qualifier. And the same beautiful lace bralettes, silk sets, and seamless styles that are available in smaller sizes are available in larger ones. Because the idea that plus-size lingerie must be plain, heavily structured, or somehow less considered is one we've never accepted.
In any bra or bralette, the underbust band carries approximately 80% of the support load. For plus-size styles, this is even more true. The band needs to be wide enough to distribute weight evenly — a narrow elastic band will dig in and roll up, which is uncomfortable and creates an unflattering line under clothing. Look for bands that are at least 3–4cm wide, with a firm but not rigid stretch.
The test: Put the bra on and fasten it on the loosest hook. The band should sit parallel to the floor, not riding up your back. If it rides up, the band is too loose — go a size down in the band, not up.
For fuller busts, cup coverage determines comfort and confidence. Full-coverage cups hold everything in place without creating the "shelf" effect where the top of the cup cuts across the breast. Look for cups that have enough depth (measured from side to centre) to fully contain your bust — a cup that's too shallow creates spillage over the top edge, which is both uncomfortable and visible under clothing.
Stretch lace cups have an advantage here: they mould to your exact shape rather than imposing a pre-formed structure onto it. This is why a well-made lace bralette can be more flattering for fuller busts than a rigid foam-cup bra — it works with your shape, not against it.
Narrow spaghetti straps distribute weight across a very small area of your shoulder, which causes grooves, discomfort, and — over time — genuine postural issues. For plus-size styles, look for straps that are at least 1.5–2cm wide, ideally with some padding at the shoulder or a construction that prevents the elastic from cutting in.
Adjustable straps are non-negotiable. Every body carries weight differently, and the perfect strap length varies significantly even within a single size. Any bra that doesn't offer strap adjustment is simply not doing its job properly.
The single most important quality indicator in plus-size lingerie is fabric. The difference between a ₹200 and a ₹900 bralette in a larger size is almost entirely felt in the fabric — how it moves with you, how it feels against your skin after eight hours of wear, and how it holds its shape and colour after washing.
Look for: stretch lace that has genuine recovery (returns to its original shape after stretching, not just stays stretched), microfibre that's smooth rather than plasticky, and cotton blends that are breathable rather than dense. Avoid: synthetic fabrics with no breathability, lace that's stiff or scratchy, and elastic that looks decorative but has no real structure.
| Occasion | Best style | What to prioritise |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday wear | Seamless panties + lightly padded bralette | All-day comfort, no visible lines |
| Office or formal occasions | Full-coverage lace bralette or padded bra | Support + smooth silhouette under structured clothing |
| Under sarees | Seamless or strapless, plus saree shapewear | No strap visibility, smooth under drape |
| Evenings / intimate occasions | Stretch lace bralette set | Beautiful, moves with your body, genuinely comfortable |
| Workout / active | Plus-size sports bra with racerback | High support, moisture-wicking, no movement |
| Sleep / loungewear | French knickers + soft bralette or no bra | Maximum comfort, nothing digging in overnight |
Most Indian women are wearing the wrong bra size. Studies suggest the figure is as high as 80% — and the problem is particularly acute in larger sizes, where brands offer fewer options and women are more likely to default to "whatever fits" rather than what actually fits correctly.
Here's how to measure properly, at home, in two minutes:
Important note: Indian brand sizing varies significantly from international sizing. Always check the specific size chart for the brand you're buying from. Our CELAORA size guide gives measurements in centimetres for every size from S through 5XL — use it before ordering.
Our plus-size collection was built on a single principle: the same quality, the same beauty, the same range of styles — in every size we offer. You'll find lace bralettes, seamless panties, full bra sets, bridal styles, and comfortable everyday options all the way to 5XL.

Shop Now →Beautiful lingerie is not a reward for reaching a certain size or a certain version of your body. It is not something to invest in "once I lose a few kilos" or "when I feel better about myself." It is available to you right now, in exactly the body you have today — and wearing it, genuinely wearing it rather than saving it for some hypothetical future version of yourself, is one of the simpler ways to remind yourself that you are entirely worth the investment.
We built our plus-size range because we believe this completely. We hope you'll find something in it that makes you feel exactly that way.
